The kidneys play an important role in maintaining the internal stability of human body. They can clean the blood by filtering metabolic wastes and excreting them in the form of urine. They also have a role in maintaining the pH balance of the blood, electrolyte balance, control blood pressure, etc. Damages imposed on the kidneys may cause Renal Failure.
Renal Failure or kidney failure is a medical condition in which the kidneys could not filter the metabolic wastes and toxins present in the blood. What are clinical manifestations of Renal Failure?
The symptoms of Renal Failure vary from one person to the other. There is no obvious symptom in the early stage, but as the disease progresses, symptoms will start to present. The most important clinical manifestations of Renal Failure are as follows.
Symptom 1: Changes in urination
Kidneys make urine, so when the kidneys are failing, the urine may change. How?
◆ You may urinate less often, or in smaller amounts than usual.
◆ Your urine may contain blood.
◆ You may feel pressure or have difficulty urinating.
Symptom 2: Swelling
Damaged kidneys do not remove excess fluid, which builds up in your body causing swelling in the legs, face, lower limbs, etc.
Symptom 3: Skin itching
Kidneys can remove wastes from the bloodstream. If the kidneys are damaged, the buildup of wastes in your blood can cause serious itching.
Symptom 4: Bad breath
A buildup of wastes in the blood can make food taste different and cause bad breath. You may also notice that you are losing weight because you just do not feel like eating.
Symptom 5: Nausea and vomiting
A buildup of wastes in the blood can also cause nausea and vomiting. Loss of appetite may result in weight loss.
Symptom 6: Difficulty of breathing
This can be related to the kidneys in two ways. First, excess fluid in the body can build up in the lungs. And second, anemia can leave your body oxygen-starved and short of breath.
Symptom 7: Flank pain
Some people with Renal Failure may have pain in the back or side related to the affected kidney.
You should know that prevention is better than cure. To prevent Renal Failure, you should drink a lot of water, stop smoking and drinking beverages, prevent diabetes and high blood pressure. It is also necessary for you to do yearly check up to ensure proper functioning of the kidneys.
