Diet Principle for Nephrotic Syndrome Patients

First, sodium intake. The patients with edema should have low-salt diet so as not to aggravate edema. Generally, daily salt intake should be no more than 2g. The patients should eat less pickle foods, monosodium glutamate and dietary alkali. When edema disappears, plasma protein becomes normal, the patient can have a normal diet.
Second, protein intake. For Nephrotic Syndrome patients, large amounts of plasma proteins will be discharged from the urine so the protein in the body, causing hypoproteinemia. Hypoproteinemia will make plasma colloid osmotic pressure decrease, making edema difficult to disappear and the patient’s immunity reduced. So at the early stage of the disease, the patient should take high-quality protein(1~1.5g/kg*d), such as fish and lean meat. It will help to alleviate Hypoproteinemia and a number of subsequent complications.
However, high protein diet may make renal blood flow and glomerular filtration rate increased and glomerular capillary be at high pressure. Besides, large amount of protein will also increase urine protein and accelerate glomerular sclerosis. Therefore, severe Nephrotic Syndrome patients should take less amount of high quality protein (0.7 ~ 1g/kg * d). When chronic renal damage appears, they should have low-protein diet (0.65g/kg * d).
Third, fat intake. Nephrotic Syndrome patients often have hyperlipidemia, which may cause arteriosclerosis and glomerular damage. So the patients shouldn’t eat animal organs, fat, some seafood and other foods rich in cholesterol and fat.
Fourth, supplement of trace elements. For Nephrotic Syndrome patients, the permeability of the glomerular basement membrane will increase so that lots of protein and certain trace elements and hormones will be lost through urine. As a result, the patient will be lacking in calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron and other elements. So they should supplement them appropriately. Generally speaking, the patient can eat some vegetables, fruits, grains rich in vitamins and trace elements.
No matter what kind of nutrients the patients supplement, it should be adequate. Otherwise it will increase renal damage. Besides, regular and proper diet time is also very important to normal digestion and absorption. Therefore, the patients must have reasonable and scientific diet, which is conductive to the recovery of the disease and can create a favorable environment for the repair of the kidney.
