Patients with Lupus Nephritis Should Keep a Low Sodium and Protein Diet

Lupus Nephritis is a common complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Keeping healthy diet habits can slow down the disease progression to some extent. In most cases of Lupus Nephritis, they should keep a low sodium and protein diet.
In Lupus Nephritis, the complex immune can promote an inflammatory response by activating complement and attracting inflammatory factors thus damaging normal kidney function. As a result, more sodium and fluid will build up in body leading to edema and raise blood pressure. Moreover, sodium can lead to thirst, which can lead to drinking more fluid than kidneys can remove. Therefore, the patients with Lupus Nephritis should keep a low sodium diet and decrease the intake of the following foods:
1. Processed foods: In processing the foods, much salt may be added into them so the patients will take much hidden salt that is not contained the recommended salt amount in a day. The processed foods like ham, sausage and so on.
2. Fast food like pizza, pies, sausage rolls
3. Salty snacks
4. Sauces and pickles
5. Salted seasonings
Most of the patients with Lupus Nephritis think they lose a large amount of protein in urine so they think they should they should increase the protein intake. In fact, this is a wrong idea. After protein is metabolized, they will produce much urea nitrogen. As kidneys can not discharge them out of blood, they will do much damage to kidneys. Therefore, the patients should limit the protein intake properly and reduce high protein foods like chicken, nuts, seeds, fish, cheese, milk and other dairy foods and so on.
