Hypertension and Kidney Disease

2012-02-04 09:50

Hypertension and Kidney DiseaseHypertension and Kidney Disease can influence each other. In some cases, hypertension is the main cause of their Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). In other cases, the patients primarily get Kidney Disease and then blood pressure is elevated.

1. Hypertension is a main cause of Kidney Disease

Kidneys are important organs responsible for filtering blood. If the patients with hypertension have a poor control of their blood pressure, it will lead to arteriolonephrosclerosis. As a result, the kidneys can not get sufficient blood supplement and healthy nephrons will become less and less. Finally, the patients with develop CKD. In order to slow down the progression of Hypertensive Kidney Disease and protect the residual kidney function, the patients are recommended to keep their blood pressure within 130/80 mmHg.

2. Kidney Disease can induce hypertension

In return, for the patients with CKD, as their renal function declines, their kidneys lose the normal excretion function so much fluid and sodium build up in body. It can increase the blood volume to increase thus leading to hypertension. Moreover, for renal ischemia and anoxia, more renin will be secreted by kidneys. Afterwards, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system is activated and the blood pressure will rise.

Also, hypertension can cause other complications in CKD such as heart diseases and stroke. Some patients can die of hearts attacks and stroke even when their Kidney Disease is still in its early stage. Therefore, it is very important for people to control blood pressure within control no matter it is primary or secondary.

However, when the blood pressure is high, most of people often do not have symptoms and feel just fine. Some people may have headaches or dizziness. Therefore, it is very important for the patients with hypertension and kidney disease to monitor their blood pressure regularly.

The two general ways to lower blood pressure include life style changes and medication. The patients with hypertension should limit the salt intake, avoid smoking and drinking, and take proper exercises and so on.

In order to decrease the incidence of Kidney Disease and slow down the disease progression for the patients with CKD, they should have a good control of their blood pressure effectively.
