Diabetic Nephropathy is the most common complication of Diabetes. Once renal dysfunction occurs, high blood pressure and fatigue will appear for the light disease; the severe one will completely lose self-care ability, or even life. Therefore, the patients with Diabetic Nephropathy must attach great importance to the disease. Among them, diet is one of the most important factors so that the patients can reduce the load on the kidney.
First, the control of blood sugar. Increased blood sugar will induce fatty cholesterol metabolism deficiency and then capillary sclerosis. The key to controlling blood sugar is to limit calorie intake, and the second is to insist on taking hypoglycemic medicine and then to avoid emotional fluctuations and infections.
Second, limit of salt intake. In order to protect the kidney and reduce its work load, Diabetic patients should eat tasteless dishes. The salt intake should be less than 7 grams per day and severe Renal Failure patients should limit water intake.
Third, appropriate restrictions on potassium and protein intake. For Diabetic Nephropathy patients, it’s easy to appear acidosis and hyperkalemia, which may induce arrhythmia and hepatic coma. Therefore, the patients should restrain potassium drinks and fruits rich in potassium. Daily protein intake should be controlled at 0.6 -0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight, and the food should be digestible fish, lean meat.
Fourth, adequate intake of vitamins, trace elements. Especially, vitamin B, vitamin C and zinc, calcium, iron can play a protective role of the kidney. So the patients can supplement them properly.
Foods to be avoided in Diabetic Nephropathy are White sugar, brown sugar, glucose and sweets, such as sugar, pastries, jams, honey, preserves, ice cream, etc.
