Can You Prevent Diabetes from Progressing into Renal Failure

2012-01-21 09:05

In recent years, with the life style changes, more and more people are diagnosed with Diabetes. Correspondingly, Renal Failure population caused by Diabetes also rises. How does Diabetes develop into Renal Failure? Do all patients with Diabetes have 100% chance of developing Renal Failure? Can you prevent Diabetes from progressing into Renal Failure?

Diabetes can lead to Renal Failure

Our kidneys are composed of capillaries responsible for filtering blood. In normal case, the kidneys can remove the metabolic wastes and excessive water into urine. However, in Diabetes, if the patients have a poor control of their blood glucose over time, the high blood glucose will damage the capillaries leading to vascular sclerosis, capillary wall thickening. As a result, the renal capillaries will fail to filter blood normally as before. Eventually, it will lead to Renal Failure.

However, not all patients with Diabetes will develop Renal Failure. If they can take preventive measures, they will be able to decrease the incidence of Renal Failure.

1. Control blood sugar: High blood sugar is the main cause of kidney injury in Diabetes. Therefore, the best way to prevent kidney damage and slow down Diabetic Nephropathy progression is to have a firm control of blood sugar. The patients should develop good diet habits, take proper exercise, and take medications for high blood sugar and even insulin.

2. Control blood pressure: High blood pressure can aggravate the excretion of protein thus causing further damage to kidneys. Generally speaking, the patients with Diabetes should keep their blood pressure within 130/ 80 mmHg, which can decrease the incidence of Renal Failure.

3. Do regular tests: Many patients with Diabetes often neglect or do not know that Diabetes can lead to renal injury. Therefore, most of them do not find it until Diabetic Nephropathy develops into clinical stage with a large amount of urine protein. In order to block renal injury, the patients should do regular urine test, blood test and renal function test to find if they have renal injury in the first time, especially those patients with more than 5 years’ history of Diabetes. If possible, the patients with Diabetes should urine microalbumin test, which can tell you if you have renal injury in the first time.

4. Effective treatment: In Type 1Diabetes, the body cells fail to secrete enough insulin to meet body need. Type 2 Diabetes results from insulin resistance for the body cells can not make full use of the insulin. If the injured cells can repaired in Type 1 Diabetes and insulin resistance can be diminished in Type 2 Diabetes, the disease will be inhibited from progression. If so, it is impossible for Diabetes to lead to renal injury.

In order to prevent Diabetes from progressing into Renal Failure, effective preventive measures and treatments are very important. Hope the above information is helpful for you.
