How Long Can Patients on Dialysis Live

2012-02-05 17:11

Dialysis is an important replacement therapy for the patients with End Stage Renal Failure (ESRF). Dialysis is different from our kidneys and it can only take over a portion of kidney function. Therefore, during dialysis process, the renal function still keeps decreasing. Therefore, the patients are very concerned how long they can live once starting dialysis. This article will give them a response.

In fact, there is no a specific answer to the mentioned question. If the patients with End Stage Renal Failure (ESRF) can guarantee adequate dialysis regularly, it can reduce the incidence of complications. Generally speaking, the patients can live longer than 10 years after they start dialysis. However, in consideration of their different physiques and the severity of their diseases as well as complications, the life expectancy is also closely related to those factors. Unfortunately, some patients may die within five years and even a short time for serious complications after their dialysis.

It can not be denied that dialysis plays a crucial role in maintaining the patients’ life. However, it only can remove the accumulated uremic toxins and excess fluid in body, but can not treat the root causes of End Stage Renal Failure. Therefore, the renal function will reduce gradually. Therefore, dialysis just maintains the patients’ life temporarily, but it can not improve their renal function in a long run.

In conclusion, dialysis just can be considered as an assistant therapy in treating End Stage Renal Failure (ESRF), which can provide a favorable internal environment for restoring impaired kidneys.

In order to prolong the patients’ life expectancy and improve their life quality for the patients with End Stage Renal Failure (ESRD), the fundamental therapy for them is to repair the impaired kidneys and protect their residual renal function to the most extent. Once their kidneys recover the their normal filtration function and secretion ability, the related symptoms like anemia, high blood pressure and so on will also disappear. Afterwards, the life expectancy of the patients with End Stage Renal Failure will improve certainly.
